PRAISE TO GOD

To the only invisible God, the Father of truth, who sent forth to us the Saviour and Founder of immortality, through whom He also revealed to us the truth and the heavenly life, to Him be the glory forever and ever.

PRAYER – For the Knowledge of God’s Will

Almighty and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being, who hast created us for Thyself, so that we can find rest only in Thee; grant unto us such purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing Thy will, no weakness from doing it; but in Thy light we may see light clearly, and in Thy service find perfect freedom; for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen!

PRAYER – The Heavenly Food of God’s Word

O God, who hast so made us that we live not by bread alone, but by every word of God; and who hast taught us not to spend our labour on that which cannot satisfy; cause us to hunger after the heavenly food of Thy Word, and to find in it our daily provision on the way to eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!

Prayers for Divine Service, 1923, Church of Scotland

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Lord, we have come to see that our lives fall far short of Your glory.

Have mercy and forgive us.

Lord, You have given Your life for us and poured out Your Spirit, yet we fail to return Your love with all our heart.

Have mercy and forgive us.

Often we are selfish and proud, ignoring You and neglecting others.

Have mercy and forgive us.

Lord, when we do not truly trust and obey You, we are overwhelmed by self-pity, fear and worry.

Have mercy and forgive us.

In Christ we are given a sure hope and secure love, yet we follow the false hopes and desires of this world.

Have mercy and forgive us.

Father, through the redeeming death of Your Son on the cross, by Your Spirit and through Your word, transform and renew us to follow You.

Have mercy and forgive us.

HYMN:       129       “Amazing Grace

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

“If anybody sins, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:1b-2)

THANKSGIVING

Lord, we thank You for the splendour with which You have filled all creation; for the immensity and extent of the universe, which defies our understanding; and for the beauty of our world, which is greater than our words to describe it.

We praise You for the place You have given us in Your creation.

Thank You for those who, through words and pictures, through music and writing, have added to the beauty of Your wonderful world; thank You that we reflect Your image when we desire to create that which is good.

Thank You for all who have been transformed by the sight of beauty, the touch of love, the care of compassion, the challenge of Your word, the assurance of forgiveness, and the presence of Christ.

Thank You, most of all, for the good news of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, and for those moments when You break into our lives all over again; for helping us to recognize the purpose of Your love in the whole of Your creation.

We bring our prayers in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!

(David Clowes)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

A PRAYER BEFORE READING THE SCRIPTURES

Lord, as I read the psalms let me hear You singing.

As I read Your words, let me hear You speaking.

As I reflect on each page, let me see Your image,

And as I seek to put Your precepts into practice, let my heart be filled with joy. Amen!     (Gregory of Nazianzus, 329-389)
