CHURCH COUNCIL REPORT

This time last year we travelled to Narrabri in a minibus. This year we spent a glorious week at Shoalhaven Heads on the south coast. Our timing was perfect, between two rain events. While the paddocks looked green there was lots of ground water. Krikor drove 10 of us in a 12-seater bus and we stayed in cabins in a caravan park on the banks of the Shoalhaven River where it meets the sea. This is the location of an international airport, not for aircraft, but birds coming from as far away as Alaska. It is here they lay eggs, raise their young and then fly north again, leaving behind those too old or too young to make the journey which takes 8 days, nonstop! While in the area we visited Bundanon (the artists retreat), Meroogal (1860s house), Berry markets, Ulladulla fishing boats, the Kiama Blowhole and two wineries (where we did some tastings). On Sunday morning we joined the congregation at Berry Uniting Church where we were made to feel most welcome. We had two BBQs at our own cabin, ate once at the Bowlo and patronized other local eateries. 5:00 pm each evening was ‘happy hour’ so we had lots of time to chat and get to know each other. Destination for our next trip TBA.

On June 16 we will have a visit from the new Presbytery Minister, Rev. Punam Bent. She will preach during the Sunday Morning Service and join us at morning tea and is happy to take questions. Please feel free to ask about any concerns you have about the life of our church after 31 May 2025, when Krikor retires.

To celebrate the anniversary of the Uniting Church, which falls on 22 June, we will have a combined Service with Lane Cove UC on June 23 at the usual time 9:30 am. Our guest preacher will be Mr Jim Mien AM. Please make an extra effort to join us for the next two Sundays’ Worship Services.

Ordination of Liam McKenna – Saturday 27 July 2024 2:00 pm at Neutral Bay UC.

Induction of Liam McKenna – Saturday 10 August 2024 2:00 pm as Lane Cove Community Chaplain. Venue TBA.

The tenants at the Manse and the small hall are happy. Minor repairs, such as replacement of an air conditioning unit, have been completed.

Please write Saturday 3 August in your diary – it may be our final Market Morning! See back page.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those undergoing, or recovering from, treatment and those feeling sadness at the loss of a loved one. We also remember those affected by the trauma of war in Ukraine, Artsakh, Israel and Palestine.

STAMP NEWS

Please continue to save stamps and place them in the box at the back of the church. We had a donation of hundreds of used stamps and a couple of albums from David and Gillian Moore, who live in Longueville (Gillian was the Principal of PLC some years ago). One recent TIME 4 U morning we sorted and trimmed these and they have now been deposited in the city.

MOTHER’S DAY LUNCH – 5 MAY

As in the past, we celebrated all mothers with a fellowship lunch. Instead of a middle eastern feast we had chicken and roast lamb, organised by Krikor. Every lady was presented with a pair of fluffy bed socks and some eucalyptus lozenges, just in time for the coming chilly winter weather.

TIME 4 U, Wednesdays at 10:00 am

Time 4U is held every Wednesday from 10-12 noon. We are pleased to continue either viewing the excellent series Backroads or playing board games.

Cost: $5 for home-made morning tea and a welcoming and friendly morning amongst friends.

The Sydney Mandolin Orchestra (established 1932) will present an exciting program of music from around the world spanning classical, Neapolitan, folk, modern and popular repertoire on Tuesday 25 June at 7:30 pm in LCM Anglican Church, 19 Rosenthal Ave, Lane Cove.

Tickets are available via our website www.lanecovemusic.org.au

or $30 (cash only) at the door.

BUS TRIP

A big thank-you to Rev. Gaby at Bankstown Uniting Church for offering their bus for a day trip later in the year, when the weather is warmer. We will advise the date and destination when we have a firm plan.

MARKET MORNING Saturday 3 August

It is less than 2 months until we hold this iconic event! Dee has kindly offered to co-ordinate the day; we are most grateful for her generosity. It will be a scaled back event and we aim to have nothing left at the end of the day! Please think of how you can help beforehand with baking, setting up and on the day itself. We will make minimal use of the stage as that is where the new grand piano resides.

LOCAL ELECTIONS – 14 SEPTEMBER

Our hall will be a polling station and we plan to have a stall. Please make a note of the date.

SPRING FASHION PARADE – Wednesday 18 September, 10:15 am

Once again, we will welcome Stafford Fashions with spring clothes and Tina Hyman with her jewellery. Start the day with a sumptuous morning tea and browse among the garments prior to the parade. After the parade, try and buy!

Entry fee is $12 per person and proceeds will help support the Exodus Foundation. Please put this date in your diary and invite friends and neighbours. Come along and support this event.
