August – September 2024 Newsletter
Hard work and dedication are essential qualities for achieving our goals, no matter what they are. With hard work, we can develop the skills and discipline needed to succeed, while dedication gives us the strength to overcome any obstacle that comes our way.
When it comes to achieving our goals, there’s one thing that stands above everything else – hard work and dedication. Without these two qualities, it’s almost impossible to achieve anything worthwhile. But with hard work and dedication, we can achieve most things, just as we did for Market Morning.
Hard work and dedication are so important because success doesn’t come easy. It takes perseverance and putting in the time and effort to get things done. It’s about going the extra mile, doing more than what’s expected. When we work hard, we become better at what we do, and we develop a sense of discipline and commitment that will help us in all aspects of our lives.
CHURCH COUNCIL REPORT
We all wanted Market Morning 2024 to be special and it was! Virginia started the day at 6:30 am with her customary announcement on ABC radio that we would be open at 8:00 am. By that time an orderly queue had formed. There was a steady stream of shoppers, the rain held off and everyone who attended received a genuine bargain. We were thrilled when Virginia arrived, to be greeted by many well-wishers. She was thanked for her many years of sterling service and given a rousing three cheers.

This was a real team effort, everyone who was well enough to attend made a contribution. This involved not only manning the stalls on Saturday morning, but unpacking and setting up during the week before, cooking and jam making at home. Sales closed at 1:00 pm then there was another round of packing up. We had made a conscious decision that ‘Everything Must Go’. Frances from St. Michael’s Church indicated her willingness to help by selling goods on-line. By Saturday evening we had an offer from a group of refugees to purchase all the books so they can set up a library. Some items will be donated to Vinnies, others sold via a website and a small amount will go to landfill.
Any leftover jams will be for sale on Election Day, September 14, when we will need more cakes jams, slices and plants.
There were three magnificent hampers which were donated to us by Margaret Murden, Sonia’s Lebanese and Artarmon Continental Food Groceries. The winners were Stan Lee, the Overtons and Megan Cribb. The Hummerston’s meat voucher went to Matthew Breeze.

Special thanks to Krikor’s generous friends, Haig and Maty Yostikian, who made the delicious Kebab wraps, and donated all the sale money.
Many thanks to Dee and Krikor for their planning, guidance, encouragement, hard work over many hours and support which ensured that the day was a success. We were able to raise the substantial sum of $12,000. WELL DONE!
So ends a chapter in the life of St. Andrew’s. The first Saturday next August will be filled with happy memories of former Market Mornings.

REV. BILL CREWS’ FOUNDATION INVITATION
St. Andrew’s received an invitation to attend a Christmas in July dinner at Bill Crews’ Loaves and Fishes restaurant to thank donors. Chris, Wendy and Penny took the train to Ashfield on a chilly 25 July Thursday evening. The hall was filled with about 80 Exodus supporters, where we were served a hearty 3-course meal by Bill’s volunteers, with white linen tablecloths and serviettes. Ten children from the local school sang Christmas carols. Various guests were asked to introduce themselves and explain their part in supporting the Foundation. Our contribution has been for over 30 years. The Foundation does far more than feed the homeless.

Here is what was achieved during 2023/2024:
448,125 meals served, 25,173 food parcels, 4,455 healthcare and social work consultations and 466 children attending literacy and therapy programs
LIAM McKENNA’s ORDINATION

Krikor, Chris and Penny attended Liam’s ordination service on Saturday 27 July at Neutral Bay Uniting Church. It was a joyous but formal service with several members of Presbytery taking an active role. We were able to spend time talking with ministers and lay people while partaking of a delicious afternoon tea. Liam’s first placement is a continuation of his role as Lane Cove Chaplain at Lane Cove Uniting Church.
