ST. ANDREW’S CONNECTIONS

Over the years, St. Andrew’s people have discovered surprising connections with each other. Some of these connections are linked back to places such as Cootamundra and Temora, elsewhere in the NSW Riverina and as far away as Aberdeen, Scotland.

Recently, Jan Cartwright and Roslyn McCawley have been surprised and delighted to find a different kind of link to each other, which goes back 72 years!

In the 1940s and 50s, the Presbyterian Church in New South Wales, had a Welfare of Youth Department, which oversaw the church Sunday Schools. Once a year the Department conducted annual, state-wide Sunday School exams, for which children could study and sit and win prizes. These exams were not compulsory, but for Jan and Roslyn there was no choice – their fathers were Sunday School Superintendents. Jan’s father, Arthur Thomas, was in charge at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, Artarmon and Roslyn’s father, Martin Imrie, held the position at St. David’s Presbyterian, Lindfield/Killara. Their daughters were definitely to sit for the Sunday School exams, and they duly did, on a Saturday in their Sunday School halls.

A few weeks ago (May 2022), Jan mentioned that she had a Bible which had been awarded to her as a prize (in Sunday School exams) and the certificate in the Bible stated she had come 1st place equal. Jan wondered who the girl was or boy whose results had equalled hers, long ago. You can guess what happened next.

Roslyn had treasured a similar Bible since childhood and knew that she too had gained equal 1st place. She checked with Jan and found that they were both awarded 1st Prize in the Junior 8 Section in 1950. So, they had tied with each other!

Another link with St. Andrew’s: When these Bibles were awarded to Jan and Roslyn, the Chairman of the Welfare of Youth Council was Rev. Louis Blanchard, and he signed the Award certificates. Rev. Blanchard was a Minister at St. Andrew’s Longueville at that time (1945 – 1967). Who would have thought that Jan and Roslyn would meet in the 1970s, as members of that very Congregation and then, many years after that, discover their childhood connection?

A REMINDER FOR ALL OF US

He who has health has hope.

He who has hope has everything.

CHURCH COUNCIL REPORT

We were very pleased that Krikor was able to make a short trip to Armenia in early July, and to come home safely. While there he was able to visit the Demirchian family that we supported last year and will continue to support in 2022. The family has grown – there are now 10 children! The oldest girl is now married, and the oldest boy has joined the army. Sadly, the father was killed in the war, so they really value our support. The AMAA has built a substantial extension to their house and provided the necessary furniture, the younger children will need our support so they can go to school. Our target is $3,000, means around $150 from each member of congregation..

Thank you to those who responded to the request from The Exodus Foundation for UHT milk. It is rewarding to respond to a specific need.

It was good to join Lane Cove on 26 June for our Combined Service on the occasion of the 45th Anniversary of the Uniting Church, as well as to join Crows Nest Uniting to participate in Sunday worship on 3 July when Krikor was on leave.

On 23 June we played host to AMAA when they screened the documentary ‘The American Good Samaritans’. There are plans in place to make a third documentary in this series, about Australian and New Zealand missionaries titled, “The Golden Chain of Mercy”. There was a good audience attendance, and everyone was most pleased with the venue.

A couple of dates to remember: Sunday 18 September there will be an Outback BBQ to raise money for Frontier Services and Thursday 10 November will see the return of our popular fashion parade.

Stay well!

Penny Goodley
