CHURCH COUNCIL REPORT

Happy New Year everyone! This will be a very different year for us all as, sadly, we must bid farewell to Krikor on Sunday 25 May. We must make the most of the first half of this year.

On November 27 Rev. Gaby drove us to Mount Annan Botanic Gardens. The temperature was hot but there was a cool breeze as we walked through the trees and thankfully the café was air conditioned. We are very grateful to Gaby for donating his time and the Bankstown Uniting Church bus. There will be another mystery trip before Krikor departs. We will let you know the date as soon as we hear from Rev Gaby.

St. Andrew’s Day on 1 December was a memorable occasion. Rev. Bill Crews preached, then he and Heather Astle unveiled the new portrait of King Charles, which had been specially framed by Fayez. Thanks to Krikor, Dee and Lori for organizing the food and Zela and Adam for entertaining us with their beautiful music, and Robin Cummings for playing the Bag Pipes at the start and the end of the Worship Service, as well as piping the Haggis in for the special lunch.

On Sunday 15 December we had our traditional Carols and Lessons Service, which was well attended. Special thanks to David Cant for joining Mark as we sang the Carols during the service.

As we have done for many years, in December we brought in our Christmas gifts and food for the Bill Crews Foundation, and all were in on 15 Sunday December 2024. A full carload was delivered to Ashfield the following Tuesday and they were accepted with great thanks. We gave generously as much as we could to help the needy and we did that for the glory of God. Thanks to all who donated.

We had a last-minute request to sing Christmas Carols at Glenwood Nursing Home in Greenwich on Thursday 19 December. Chris and Penny were accompanied by Mark on his portable keyboard. About 20 residents attended the event and appreciated our visit.

It was wonderful to see so many attend the Christmas Eve Carol Service on the lawn when we welcomed Virginia and visiting family members from the city and country. The real candles remained unlit because of the wind, but we all had a battery operated one to take home, along with a 2025 calendar.

On the first Sunday of the year, we were pleased to have with us Dorian West who during the service, joined Mark as we sang the hymns and played a special piece of music “Oblivionby Astor Piazzola, dedicating it to his Mum Ruth West. Thanks and appreciation to Dorian for sharing his musical talent.

KRIKOR’S CLOSING SERVICE

This will be held at 11:30 am on Sunday 25 May 2025 followed by a finger food lunch and refreshments in the War Memorial Hall. Please note this date in your diary and invite friends and family members to attend.

WEEK AWAY TO WAGGA WAGGA

Our final week away with Krikor will be from Monday 28 April to Monday 5 May. We will travel from and to Central Station by train and hire a 12-seater bus at Wagga Wagga. Accommodation will be at the Big 4 Ingenia Holidays Park at Wagga Wagga. Our first trip away was to New Zealand in 2013, then Broken Hill in 2020, following that to Narrabri in 2023, then to the Shoalhaven River on the South Coast in 2024 – so we’ve been west, north, east and south – all points of the compass. A highlight of the trip is always Happy Hour at 5:00 pm each day where we gather in one of the cabins to reminisce on the day and plan the next. If you would like to come, please speak to Wendy, Chris or Penny. The more the merrier!  A relaxing and happy time is guaranteed.

BIBLE READING

After an interesting and challenging reading (Nehemiah 8:1-12) for Penny on Sunday 26 January, Ian was moved to write the following:

This morning sitting in the pew,

The pulpit clearly in full view.

The service schedule was proceeding,

Requiring Penny to do the reading.

As Penny headed to the stand,

The Bible firmly in her hand.

We knew her words would soon inspire,

As she read the text from Nehemiah.

But what this passage held in store,

Was forty foreign names or more.

So, Penny’s clear enunciation,

Was worthy of a big ovation.

For with finesse, she overcame,

Each unpronounceable foreign name.

And all of us were so impressed,

Her reading stands forever blessed.
