CALL TO WORSHIP

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing. God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before Him in love. Let us worship God.

HYMN:       100       “All Creatures of Our God and King

RESPONSIVE READING

To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. In You I trust, O my God.

Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me.

No one whose hope is in You will ever be put to shame, but You will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse.

Show me Your ways, O Lord, teach me Your paths; guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Saviour, and my hope is in You all day long.

Remember, Lord, Your great mercy and love, for they are from the old.

Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to Your love remember me, for You are good, O Lord.

O God, we trust totally in You as we trust in no other. You are the creator of all things, and our life depends on You moment by moment. You give us breath and we respond with songs of praise and hymns of adoration. You give us truth, and we teach others Your word and try to model Your ways.

You give us eternal life, and we share the gospel of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, with all who will listen.

You fill us with Your Holy Spirit, and we love others as You have loved us.

You call us Your friends, and we seek to be friends with the friendless. In all things we completely depend upon You and do not rest secure in our own strength or wisdom.

Draw us closer to You and enable us to live more faithfully as followers of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray:

“Our Father, who art in heave, hallowed be Thy name; Thy . . .

HYMN:       449       “Stand Up and Bless the Lord

A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Father, we thank You for the joy of life and for the wonderful world in which You have placed us; for all those whom You have given us to share our journey through life – for colleagues at work, for friends at church or at school, for those with whom we have shared precious moments, and for those who were there when we needed them.

We thank You for the laughter and for tears, for seeing and for listening, for thinking and doing, and for just being alive.

Father, we thank You for the words and deeds of those who have changed life for other people; those who have brought the word hope to those who are broken, the message of love to those who are down; those who have spoken words of forgiveness to those who were wrong, and whose lives have brought encouragement to those without joy.

Thank You for those who warn others of danger and to those who declare the good news of Christ.

Father, we thank You for the whole life and ministry of Jesus which gives us hope and for the promise of the Holy Spirit, who gives us new life.

We bring our thanks in Christ’s name. Amen.

HYMN:       635       “Forgive Our Sins as We Forgive

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty and merciful God, the fountain of goodness, You know the thoughts of our hearts: we confess that we have sinned against You and done what is evil in Your sight. Wash us from the stains of our past sins, and give us grace and power to put away all hurtful things, so that, being delivered from the bondage of sin, we may bring forth fruits worthy of repentance.

O eternal Light, shine into our hearts; eternal Goodness, deliver us from evil;

O eternal Power, give us Your strength; eternal Wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance;

O eternal Pity, have mercy on us.

Grant that with all our hearts, and minds, and strength we may seek Your face; and finally, in Your infinite mercy, bring us to Your holy presence.

So strengthen our weakness that, following in the footsteps of Your blessed Son, we may obtain Your mercy, and enter into Your promised joy. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

“If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He is the perfect offering for our sins, and not for ours only, but also the sins of the whole world.”

Hear then Christ’s word of grace: ‘Your sins are forgiven’.

Thanks be to God.

HYMN:     672     “Father, Lord of Earth and All Creation(Tune 153)

A PRAYER BEFORE READING THE SCRIPTURES

You, Lord, are the bread of life and the well of holiness. Just as You feed me day by day with the food that sustains my body, keeping me alive on earth, I pray that You will feed my soul with the spiritual bread of eternity, making me ready for heaven. Just as You satisfy my bodily thirst with cool water from the rivers and streams, I pray that You will pour the water of holiness into my soul, making my every word and action a joyful sign of Your love. Amen. (Bail of Caesarea 330-379)
