CALL TO WORSHIP
Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for He is our God and we are the people of His pasture, the flock under His care. (Psalm 95:6-7)
HYMN: 152 “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore You”
RESPONSIVE READING
Heavenly Father, we thank You that You have revealed Your continual love to humankind through the Bible.
We thank You, Lord, for the faithful service of those followers who wrote the original manuscripts of the Bible, directed by the Holy Spirit.
We thank You Lord, for the tireless efforts of those who copied the Holy Book by hand, verse by verse and page by page.
We thank You Lord, for the tedious labour of those who translated the words into different languages.
We thank You, Lord, for the scholarly devotion of those teachers who seek to interpret the biblical truths for our use in life today.
Grant that we may hear, read and learn these truths for our spiritual edification.
Help us to commit ourselves to study Your word that we may grow in the likeness of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Redirect our lives that we may find the truth You intended for us to learn.
(Together) O Lord, grant that by the inspiration of Your holy word, we may find strength for living and eternal hope for dying; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.
MORNING PRAYER
O Lord, Yours is the day and Yours is the night; You have perfected the light and the sun; You have made all good things of the earth, and we ask You: cause Your rich mercies to rise on our lowliness, together with the daylight. Free us from the darkness and the shadow of death and from every evil thought and device of the devil. For Yours it is to have mercy and to save us, O God, and to You we send up glory, to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. (Basil of Caesarea c. 330-379)
HYMN: 133 “O Worship the King All-Glorious Above”
A PRAYER OF CONFESSION
O Lord, You have measured the heights and the earth in the hollow of Your hand, and created the six-winged seraphim to cry out to You with an unceasing voice Holy, Holy, Holy, glory to Your name. Deliver me, from the mouth of the evil one, O Master. Forget my many evil deeds and through the multitude of your compassions grant me daily forgiveness, for You are blessed unto ages. Amen. (Sarrah Late 4th Century)
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
“If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He is the perfect offering for our sins, and not for ours only, but also the sins of the whole world.”
THANKSGIVING
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we Your unworthy servants give You humble thanks for all Your goodness and loving-kindness to us and all whom You have made. We bless You for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all Your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of Your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth Your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to Your service, and by walking before You in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with You and the Holy Spirit be honour and glory throughout all ages. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer, 1979 Episcopal Church, U.S.A.)
HYMN: 119 “I Sing the Mighty Power of God”
A PRAYER BEFORE READING THE SCRIPTURES
O Lord, You have given us Your Word for a light to shine upon our path; inspire us to meditate on that Word and to follow its teaching; that we may find its light that shines more and more until the perfect day; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Jerome 342-420)
