CALL TO WORSHIP
I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make Your faithfulness known through all generations.
I will declare that Your love stands firm forever, that You established Your faithfulness in heaven itself.
You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant,
‘I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations’”.
The heavens praise Your wonders, O Lord, Your faithfulness too in the assembly of the holy ones.
For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?
Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?
In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; He is more awesome than all who surround Him.
O Lord God Almighty, who is like You?
You are mighty, O Lord, and Your faithfulness surrounds you.
(Psalm 89:1-8)
MORNING PRAYER
Almighty and most merciful Father; we have erred and strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against Your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we should have done; and there is no health in us. But You, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare O God, those who confess their faults. Restore those who are penitent; according to Your promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for His sake; that we may hereafter live godly, righteous, and sober lives, to the glory of Your Holy Name. Amen.
HYMN: 128 “Sometimes a Light Surprises”
THANKSGIVING
We give You thanks, Holy Father, for Your sacred name, which You have planted in our hearts, and for the knowledge and faith and immortality which You have made known to us through Jesus Your servant. To You be glory forever. (The Didache)
A LITANY FOR THE CHURCH
Almighty God, You built Your church on the rock of human faith and trust; we praise You for Jesus Christ, the foundation and cornerstone of all we believe.
We praise You, O God.
For the great people of history, whose love for Your church made it a willing instrument of Your care and mercy; who placed You first in their lives and held to their faith in good times and bad.
We praise You, O God.
Save us, O God, from living in the past, and from resting on the work and witness of others. Let us catch a new vision and make a new beginning that we may faithfully serve You in this congregation and in our world today.
Lord, have mercy.
Keep us, O God, from lack of relevance for truth and beauty; from artificial life and worship, from all that is hollow or insincere.
Lord, have mercy.
Spare us, O God, from pride that excludes others from the shelter of Your love; from the selfishness that uses Your church as a means of getting social position or personal glory.
Lord, have mercy.
Save us, O God, from sin and worldliness which deny the saving power of the gospel; from shallowness of faith and hypocrisy of life which cause others to remain empty or be disillusioned.
Lord, have mercy.
That we may accept the responsibility of our freedom, the burden of our privilege; and so, conduct ourselves that we may bring others to faith in Christ.
O God, be our strength.
That we may not be content with a second-hand faith, worshipping words rather than the Word; but that we may find joy in study of the Bible, and growth in exposure to new insights.
O God, be our strength.
That we may be actively engaged in the life of our congregation, our presbytery and community, sharing in Christ’s mission to the world, and always seeking the common good.
O God, be our strength.
That we may find in Your church a prod to our imaginations, a shock to our laziness, and a source of power to do Your will.
O God, be our strength.
O God, You gave us minds to know You, hearts to love You, and voices to sing Your praise. Send the Holy spirit among us, that, confronted by Your truth, we may worship and serve You as we should, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen! The Worshipbook Services, 1970

We commit ourselves to Christ and to be open to Your will. Now fill us with Your spirit that we may live in the freedom of Your grace. Amen.
