CALL TO WORSHIP
Eternal God, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, we have gathered in this time and at this place to worship You. In Your time, You created all things, and entwined into their fabric a yearning for fulfilment in You. It is this yearning within us which has pulled us here this morning. Take these moments, O Lord, of time and space, and complete them in us, through Your Holy Spirit. May our labour bring forth a new creation in You. This is Your hour, Christ Jesus, help us to make the most of each precious moment. For in Your name we have gathered, and we pray. Amen!
HYMN: 557 “Awake My Soul, and with the Sun”
INVOCATION
O God, You who gave us birth and who will walk with us through our older years, we come to You today to worship and praise You. We call Your name, and You answer us. In every age of life, You give us what we need. Help us today to have open ears to hear the message of Your faithfulness, and to celebrate the ways in which You help us to cope with the challenges we face at every age. Surround this congregation today with Your presence, Your love and Your grace. Amen!
PRAYER
Gentle…yet powerful.
Lowly…yet almighty.
Shepherd…yet King.
In Your gentleness, guide us.
In Your power, strengthen us.
In Your lowliness, strip us our selfish pride which only destroys us.
In Your greatness, lift us up that we might aspire to greater things.
As a shepherd, call us to be Your servants.
As a King, call us to be Your royal priesthood.
O God, who is our shepherd and our King;
O Christ, who was crucified and is now risen from the dead;
O Spirit, who comforts and empowers;
O great On in Three, Holy Trinity, this hour, set us free to worship. Amen!
HYMN: 221 “Glory to God on High”
RESPONSIVE READING From Psalm 71
In you, O Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame.
Rescue me and deliver me in Your righteousness; turn Your ear to me and save me.
Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress.
Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of evil and cruel men.
For You have been my hope, O Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth.
From birth I have relied on You;you brought me forth from my mother’s womb.I will ever praise You.
I have become like a portent to many; but You are my strong refuge.
My mouth is filled with Your praise,declaring Your splendour all day long.
Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone.
For my enemies speak against me;those who wait to kill me conspire together.
They say, “God has forsaken him; pursue him and seize him, for no one will rescue him.”
Be not far from me, O God; come quickly, O my God, to help me.
May my accusers perish in shame; may those who want to harm me be covered with scorn and disgrace.
But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise You more and more.
Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God, You who have done great things. Who, O God, is like you?
Though You have made me see troubles, many and bitter, You will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth You will again bring me up.
You will increase my honour and comfort me once again.
I will praise You with the harpfor Your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praise to You with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel.
My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to You— I, whom You have delivered.
My tongue will tell of Your righteous acts all day long, for those who wanted to harm me have been put to shame and confusion.
Almighty God, You know our hearts and nothing can be hidden from You. By Your Holy Spirit, cleanse our thoughts and desires, so that we truly love You and bring honour to Your name, through Christ our Lord. Amen!
