CALL TO WORSHIP
This house of prayer is a house of grace.
We gather here to learn our needs: not to justify ourselves but to say we are sorry, not to cling to the familiar but to risk the untested, not to enjoy our own decency but to worship a holy God, not to practise positive thinking but to be caught up in God’s joy.
“It is good to praise the Lord and make music to Your name, O Most High, to proclaim Your love in the morning and Your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp.
For You make me glad by Your deeds, O Lord; I sing for joy at the works of Your hands.
How great are Your works, O Lord, how profound Your thoughts!” Psalm 92:1-5
HYMN: 93 “Praise the Lord, You Heavens Adore Him”
RESPONSIVE READING Psalm 99
HYMN: 675 “Lord, the Light of Your Love is Shining”
THE GLORY OF THE LORD IS YOUR LIGHT
Arise, shine, for your light has come;
the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
Though night still covers the earth
and darkness covers the nation,
over you will the Lord arise,
over you will God’s glory appear.
Nations will stream to your light,
and kings to your dawning brightness.
At this sight you will grow radiant,
your heart will thrill and rejoice;
for the riches of the sea will flow to you,
the wealth of the nations will come to you.
They will bring gold and frankincense,
singing the praise of the Lord.
They will come up, for acceptance, to My altar,
to adorn the Temple of My glory.
Your gates will always be open;
day or night, they will never be shut.
They will call you, The City of the Lord,
The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
Violence will no more be heard in your land,
ruin or destruction within your borders;
You will name your walls, Salvation,
you will call your gates, Praise.
No longer will the sun be your light by day,
no longer the moon give you light by night;
The Lord will be your eternal light,
your God will be your glory.
Isaiah 60:1-3, 5, 6b, 7b, 11a, 14a, 18, 19
PRAYER FOR FORGIVENESS
Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things and judge of all men. We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against Your Divine Majesty, provoking most justly Your wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for Your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please You in newness of life, to the honour and glory of Your Name. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
Hear then Christ’s word of grace to us:
Your sins are forgiven.
Thanks be to God. Amen!
A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
I bless You, O Lord, that You have worked wondrous mercies upon me, a sinner, and have been most loving to me in all things: nurse and governor, guardian and saviour, protector of both soul and body.
I bless You, O Lord, for You have granted me the power to repent from sins and have shown to me myriad occasions to return from my malice.
I bless You, O Lord, for though I am powerless, yet You strengthen my weakness and You suffer me not to fall utterly, bur straightway You stretch forth from above Your helping hand and bring me back unto Yourself. Amen! (Basil of Caesarea 330-379)
In silence, please offer your prayers to the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
A PRAYER BEFORE READING THE SCRIPTURES
Lord, as I read the psalms let me hear You singing.
As I read Your words, let me hear You speaking.
As I reflect on each page, let me see Your image,
And as I seek to put Your precepts into practice, let my heart be filled with joy. Amen! (Gregory of Nazianzus, 329-389)
