CALL TO WORSHIP
As disciples of Christ – We are learners, together.
As disciples of Christ – We are people on the Way.
As disciples of Christ – We care for one another.
As disciples of Christ – We serve, we share, we pray.
In this time together, may God’s presence transform us.
In this time together, may God’s presence transform the world!
PRAYER
However desperate we feel, however grim the challenges, Your Spirit, O God, lifts us up. The tide of Your grace surges among us. You are Lord of our life, constant in compassion, full of surprises. Refresh us, restore us, renew our commitment to You and to the Way of Jesus, through whom we pray. Amen.
INVOCATION
Let us praise and give thanks to God who meets our needs and leads us to places of tranquillity and rest.
Let us praise and give thanks to God who comforts us and replaces our fear with overflowing love.
HYMN: 132 “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty”
RESPONSIVE READING – Psalm 130
Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice.
Let Your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.
If You, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?
But with You there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve You.
I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word, I put my hope.
I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.
Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with Him is full redemption.
He Himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gift-giving God, we confess that we do not always know our own worth, that we can forget our capacity for greatness and squander opportunities for righteousness. You offer us gifts for service in Your world, and yet we can neglect Your gifts, store them away in the closet, shove them under the stairs, and give away to others the gifts You have chosen especially for us. May we have wisdom to know our gifts, courage to open them up, and dedication to use them for Your glory. Amen.
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
The good news in Christ is that when we face ourselves and God with the awareness of our need, we are given grace to grow, and courage to carry on the journey. Friends, believe the good news of the gospel.
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Amen.
HYMN: 448 “Blest are the Pure in Heart”
THANKSGIVING
Father, we thank You that You have not left us alone, but You have sought us out and welcomed us home.
We praise You that in every part of life and in every corner of our lives, Your holiness calls us to confess the height of Your glory and the depth of our sins.
Your mercy challenges us to trust You and empowers us to begin again.
We thank You that You have so designed our lives that we can know You and experience Your presence, that You have created the world in such a way that everywhere we look, we can see Your fingerprints.
We are grateful for each person whose words and deeds, and whose life and example, have spoken to us of You.
We thank You most of all for Jesus Christ, through whom You have made Yourself known and knowable; that He lived our life, shared our pain, and overcame our death; that through Your Spirit we can begin to know something of Your life, love, and joy within us.
We thank You that we can enter each day and every situation, and that we can face all that life brings us, in the knowledge of Your loving, caring, sovereign will. In Jesus’ name. Amen! (David Clowes)
HYMN: 447 “Lord, Your Almighty Word”
A PRAYER BEFORE READING THE SCRIPTURES
Lord, inspire us to read Your Scriptures and meditate upon them day and night. We ask You to give us real understanding of what we read and show us how to put Your teachings into practice, so that we may be channels of grace, enlightened by the presence of the Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ our Lord, whose power and glory will endure throughout the ages. Amen. (Origen, 185-253)
