CALL TO WORSHIP
Shout with joy to God, all the earth!
Sing glory to His name; make His praise glorious!
Say to God, “How awesome are Your deeds!
So great is Your power that Your enemies cringe before You.
All the earth bows to You; they sing praise to You, they sing praise to Your name.”
Praise our God, O people, let the sound of His praise be heard.
Psalm 66:1-4, 8
HYMN: 152 “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore You”
THANKSGIVING PRAYER
Gracious God, our heavenly Father, we humbly thank You for all Your gifts so freely given: for life and health and safety, for work and rest and friendship, and for the wonder of creation.
We thank You for preserving throughout history a people for Yourself. Above all, we praise You for our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ, for His incarnation, death and resurrection, for Your life-giving Spirit, and the hope of sharing in Your glory.
Fill our hearts with love, joy, hope and peace in believing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!
A LITANY FOR ADVENT
Lord God, we adore You because You have come to us in the past. You have spoken to us in the Law of Israel. You have challenged us in the words of the prophets. You have shown us in Jesus what You are really like.
Lord God, we adore You because You still come to us now. You come to us through other people and their love and concern for us. You come to us through men and women who need our help. You come to us as we worship You.
Lord God, we adore You because You will come to us at the end. You will be with us at the hour of death. You will still reign supreme when all human institutions fail. You will still be God when our history has run its course.
We welcome You, God who comes. Come to us now in the power of Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Lord God, we come to adore You. You are the source of all that is.
You have spoken and given form and beauty to the world. You have spoken and given purpose to human life.
You have spoken and declared the forgiveness to our sin; You have spoken, and freed us from the fear of death.
Lord Jesus Christ, divine Word, speak to us the eternal purpose; remove our guilt; conquer the fear of death in our hearts. Speak and let us hear You, Lord. Amen.
ADVENT PRAYER
Father, all powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give You thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord when He humbled himself to come among us, He fulfilled the plan you formed long ago and opened for us the way to salvation.
Now we watch for the day, hoping that the salvation promised us will be ours when Christ will come again in His glory.
And so, with all the choirs of angels in heaven we proclaim Your glory and join in their unending hymn of praise.
HYMN: “Majesty, Worship His Majesty”
LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE – HOPE Penny Goodley
To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
Lead me in Your truth, and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; for You I wait all day long. (Psalm 25)
We light the first candle of Advent, the candle of hope.
Jesus, light of our world, we hope for change in our own lives and in Your world.
We watch and work and wait together in hope. Amen!
HYMN: 271 “The Advent of Our God” (Tune ‘Carlisle’)
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Penny Goodley
Jesus said: “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth nations will be in distress, anxious over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves”.
Jesus, the One coming on the clouds with great power and great glory, we pray for all those people around the world who are suffering from the effects of natural disasters and climate change. We pray especially today for those people whose lives continue to be uprooted by climate disasters and the pandemic.
Bring hope and courage to all who suffer, to all who support them and to all who work for the healing of the earth.
