CALL TO WORSHIP

Blessed be God who has redeemed God’s people:

by the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Let us worship God!

HYMN:       132       “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty

A LITANY OF ADVENT

Lord God, we come to adore You. You are the source of all that is.

Before we were born, before time began, before the universe came into being, You were.

When time is finished, when the universe is no more, You will still be. Nothing can take Your power from you.

And in Your presence we can only be silent . . . (silence).

Yet You have spoken to us. Out of universal silence Your living word has reached us.

You have spoken, and given form and beauty to the world. You have spoken, and given purpose to human life.

You have spoken, and declared the forgiveness to our sin; You have spoken, and freed us from the fear of death.

Together: Lord Jesus Christ, divine Word, speak to us the eternal purpose; remove our guilt; conquer the fear of death in our hearts. Speak and let us hear You, Lord. Amen!

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING                                          Philippians 1:2-11

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joybecause of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me.God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

HYMN:       201       “King of Glory, King of Peace

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE – PEACE                     Ivy Lee

By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. (Luke 1)

We light the second candle of Advent, the candle of peace.

Jesus, light of our world, we hope for change in our lives and in Your world.

We watch and work and wait together for peace. Amen!

HYMN:                 “When Peace Like a River

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION                                                     Ivy Lee

John the Baptist proclaimed with Isaiah:

Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God’.

Jesus Dayspring of God, shine Your morning light into places of justice and entrenched conflict around the world. We pray for all those people who live under ongoing occupation and as they work towards a more peaceful future.

Give strength and hope to all who suffer, to all who work for change in the world and to all who work for a new dawn of peace in the world. Amen!
